<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">In New York City, there are dozens of neighborhoods to visit and while their names may seem simple, many of them are actually abbreviations, acronyms or portmanteaus.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">"Neighborhoodification" has been occurring over the past two decades when new boutiques, trendy restaurants and hip residents move in to a particular area and create one of these unique names. Confused yet? Here is the name breakdown and lowdown for five popular NYC neighborhoods:

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Soho (South of Houston Street):

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Blocks of boutiques, famous name-brand shops, and cafes make Soho a more-than-desirable spot for an afternoon of shopping and lunch. In this historic cast-iron district, you will experience beautiful architecture and various art galleries, featuring artists from across the globe. Weather permitting, discover blocks and blocks of new, inspiring artists in a sea of street vendors including talented jewelry designers, painters, and photographers.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Nolita has also become known for its boutique shopping and quaint cafes. While Soho possesses a certain hustle and bustle, Nolita is full of quiet spots that give the neighborhood an off-the-beaten-path flair. Nolita is also the home to The Market NYC, a flea market where local independent artists, designers and entrepreneurs sell their creations, which is a must-see for any fashionista.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">MePa is the spot for nightlife whether you're looking for a full-on club or a low-key lounge. Find high-fashion designer shops including Diane Von Furstenberg and Stella McCartney without the same overwhelming Soho crowd. MePa is also the starting point for the High Line, a public park built on an old freight line elevated above the street, which is perfect for a relaxing stroll with beautiful views.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">FiDi is the home of Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange, and with the work crowd comes some great lunch spots and happy hours. Battery Park is just steps away, where you can catch a glimpse of Lady Liberty, the World Financial Center and New York Harbor. Snap a picture with the Charging Bull, one of NYC's biggest tourist attractions.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Home to some of the most expensive real estate in the country, Tribeca is known for its out-of-this-world restaurants and celebrity sightings. The once industrial cast-iron buildings have now been converted into beautiful loft residences, drawing only the rich and famous. Tribeca is also home to the Tribeca Film Festival, founded by Robert De Niro in 2002, which brings in nearly three million visitors to the neighborhood each year.

When thinking about some of the great eats in New York City, delis and pizzerias most definitely come to mind. The problem is, you can only have so much pastrami and so many sloppy slices before you begin craving a change of pace. Here are some sweet suggestions for your NYC visit:

Magnolia Bakery
Magnolia has been the bakery hotspot since Carrie Bradshaw devoured one of their delicious pink buttercream icing cupcakes on an episode of Sex and the City. What people don't know is that the banana pudding is actually their showstopper. The creamy, puffy pudding, along with fresh bananas and vanilla wafers will have you saying "What cupcake?" Now with multiple locations around Manhattan, you shouldn't have to wait in line... for too long.

Dylan's Candy Bar
Walking into Dylan's Candy Bar will make you feel like you stepped right into a scene from Willy Wonka. Founded by Ralph Lauren's daughter, Dylan, this store featuring rows and rows of candy ranging from Swedish fish to hard tack to chocolate will certainly give you a sugar rush. If that's not reason enough to feel like "a kid in a candy store", pull out a dollar bill and head to the chocolate fountain where they'll give you your choice of fruit to dip in the velvety chocolate falls.

Serendipity III
A young John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale come to mind when you think Serendipity. The restaurant where they filmed the romantic flick, actually known as Serendipity "III" or "3" was made famous by the sweet love story and is known for their Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, which at one time drew celebs in like Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol and Jackie O. This popular location, its rich history and, of course, its dessert, makes the wait for a table worth it. They do not accept "dessert-only" reservations so to avoid waiting too long it's recommended to reserve a table for a full meal.

Ferrara's
Owned and operated by the same Italian family since 1892, this Little Italy gem will instantly have you in a cannoli craze. And if that doesn't suit your fancy, rows and rows of other delicate pastries displayed in their cases certainly will. Enjoy a savory sweet, sip their famous espresso and take in the old-world ambiance and you'll surely feel like you're in a scene from a classic movie.

Baked by Melissa
Cupcakes in New York City have become "a thing" much like pizza. One of the biggest problems when it comes to having one of those hearty cakes, however, is deciding on oh-so-many flavors! If only you could have one bite of each. With Baked by Melissa, you can. Her bite-sized cupcakes in flavors like Peanut Butter & Jelly, Mint Cookie and Chocolate Chip Pancake give you a taste of variety without feeling the guilt.

New York City can be overwhelming on so many levels and when you're visiting from out of town you only have about a million questions that need to be answered. So before your trip, you Google and Google until your fingers fall off, or you call your second cousin who lived in Queens twenty years ago, but everything you find or anyone you talk to is only telling you about the latest Broadway show or the new museum exhibit that's an absolute must. In the midst of all the exciting things to do and see, here are some tips that will help you to survive your visit to the Big Apple:

1. Manhattan vs. Other Boroughs
New York City is made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Manhattan is most likely where you'll spend the majority of your time. The other boroughs require you to cross a river to get there. Most of the popular hotels, theaters, museums, etc. are on the island of Manhattan and depending on how many times you've visited before, you may or may not choose to venture out to the surrounding boroughs. I guess you'll literally cross that bridge when you come to it.

2. "The Subway" and "The Train" are the Same
There's the Long Island Railroad, the New Jersey Transit and the MetroNorth, but you will be dealing with what's called the MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) which consists of the New York City Bus and Subway System. When people tell you to take "the subway" or to take "the train", they are referring to the MTA subway system--any trains that run underground in Manhattan. So don't hop on that train in Grand Central Station because the cool guy on the street said to "take the train." Lovely as it is, I'd hate for you to end up in Connecticut.

3. Public Restrooms
Sure, there are plenty of parks with public restrooms and some subway stations but I would avoid those at all costs quite honestly, because what awaits you in those restrooms is always a mystery--a less than pleasant mystery. You're much better off strolling into a hotel lobby nonchalantly and making your way to the restrooms there. Also, some of the larger department stores or chain stores (Bloomingdale's, Old Navy, Apple, etc.) provide a pleasant environment for relief when nature calls. Starbuck's is a good idea in theory, but unless you're willing to wait in a 20-minute latte line, I'd steer clear of that option as well.

4. Layering
I understand that you don't want to look like a GAP window display gone terribly wrong, but no matter what the season in NYC, you'll be sorry if you don't layer. When you're out and about in 20-degree weather and then head into a building that's pushing 88 degrees, you'll thank me. On the flip side, when it's a humid, sticky 90, and you decide to go to the museum, if you don't have a top layer on-hand, you may very well end up frozen and put on display next to the wooly mammoth.

5. Always ask for the Cross Streets
New York City is mapped out as a grid with streets running east to west and avenues running north to south for the most part. No matter what your form of transportation (Uber, taxi, walking, etc.), when asking for directions or looking at a map always ask for or take note of the cross streets. It will save you a great deal of time, not to mention backlash from upset New Yorkers as you stand dazed and confused in the middle of the sidewalk staring blankly at Google maps on your smartphone.
Donations to Project City Kids are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Project City Kids provides educational and recreational opportunities to kids who live in New York City. The focus of these opportunities is to give kids an opportunity to experience New York Harbor. Seeing the skyline from this new perspective personalizes the city and inspires kids.

PCK was founded in 1987 and has provided sailing and other harbor-related activities to thousands of kids.

Big Toot is a former US Navy launch. Now she is owned and operated by Project City Kids. Big Toot is based from North Cove Marina in Battery Park City, Lower Manhattan. Every weekend from May through October, she goes out on short (50 minute) trips in the harbor. Kids from all over New York City are invited down and can ride for free (adults pay $10). This is your chance to see up close the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and all the great harbor activity!

Schedule: Big Toot operates on Saturdays and Sundays. Big Toot departs from North Cove at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. There is no departure at 12 noon because the Big Toot captain & mate get lunch from 12 noon to 1 p.m.

Length of Each Trip: The length of each ride is approximately 50 minutes.

Capacity: Each ride can hold a total of 34 passengers (kids and adults together)

Where to meet the boat: Big Toot departs from Dock F at North Cove. For directions on how to get to North Cove, please visit www.sailmanhattan.com/Location%20North%20Cove.htm.

Costs: All kids ride for free! Tickets for adults are $10 each. Fees from adults help pay for the free rides for kids. Kids under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Each adult may bring up to 6 kids.

Trip Route: Each trip begins at North Cove. The you head out into New York Harbor and pass the "Honorable William Wall," Manhattan Sailing Club's floating clubhouse in the harbor. Then you skirt along the eastern side of Ellis Island and pass the front of the Statue of Liberty. Big Toot will pause at the Statue so everyone can get a good look and take their picture with the Statue in the background. From here, Big Toot will continue along south side of Liberty State Park. At the back of the channel there is a large turning basin which is also where the Operation Optimist kids sailing program takes place. Then Big Toot will head back to North Cove.NYC Kids Tourshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16873750048700554269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2922345906363317720.post-4650008761898062832010-08-10T21:17:00.001-07:002010-08-10T21:36:17.466-07:00NYC Kids Learning and Fun Tour for the Whole Family!Our last NYC Kids Learning and Fun Tour was for an entire family from Missouri. They were such a pleasant group of people and their girls (5-and-a-half, 3 and 1) were super sweet and adorable! Although the girls were a little young for the tour, they stayed very engaged and involved throughout the tour and asked a lot of questions.

They were very interested in learning about the carousel in Bryant Park and took lots of pictures. They were also very happy to know that Bryant Park was named after a poet (one of the little girls even enjoys writing songs.

In Times Square, they were pretty mesmerized by the crystal ball that drops on TV in front of billions of people every New Years. They also couldn't believe all of the advertisements on One Times Square today as opposed to how the building looked over a hundred years ago.

One of their favorite stops was Central Park, where they took part in their scavenger hunt and had a great time doing it. We climbed up the Overlook Rock with dad and waved to mom, grandma and grandpa from above. The girls wrote their names on the rocks with our sidewalk chalk and enjoyed taking a picture of their accomplishment. They also LOVED watching the ducks in Central Park and didn't understand why people were feeding them bread when we learned that the conservancy does not allow feeding of the wildlife.

Dylan's Candy Bar was a success, as usual. We had an amazing time playing the OLOGY game while mom, grandma and grandpa took a break in the upstairs cafe with the one-year-old, who didn't take part much in the tour, except she did love throwing the penny into the wishing well at Bryant Park!

Our last stop was Balto and the 5-and-a-half-year-old told me about the movie, Balto, that she had seen. The girls were both very excited to see the statue of him and take pictures of him.

At this point, the tour was coming to an end. We dropped the family off at the Gazillion Bubbles Show, where their dad told me they had an excellent time as well! Here's what the dad had to say about the tour:

"Once again thank you for your tour. The girls really enjoyed it. (My daughter) was wanting to go on the tour again and was asking when she could do that and (my other daughter) wanted to know where "Miss Tasha" was. They both have talked about the tour a lot. They also had a blast at the Gazillion Bubbles show too."
It's the perfect ending to our NYC Kids Learning and Fun Tour and just a few blocks away from FAO Schwarz. This attraction will keep you and your kids entertained for hours. (I know I enjoyed it!)

When you first enter, you create a virtual profile that you can use throughout your visit. As you approach different activity stations, you blink your card and your profile picture comes up. There are quite a few options to choose from on the four different floors of the lab. Some include programming your own robot, learning about nanotechnology, performing virtual surgery, use of an HDTV studio and creating characters in an animation studio.

In addition to these activities, the lab also showcases some fun, animated short films and gives a GREAT deal of knowledge about how technology has evolved over the years. One of my favorite things was seeing one of the camcorders we had in the 1980s along with the word processor I know my mom had in the 1970s. Those things sure look big and bulky compared to what we have available to us today. The crazy thing is that in 10 to 20 more years, what we use now will be obsolete.

At any rate, the Sony Wonder Technology Lab will get you and your children thinking on your feet. It will keep you active, engaged and excited about learning.
But what if you want to schedule a special private tour for your school group/field trip or your child's birthday party? NYC Kids Tours can help!

If you have a school group or are planning a field trip, we're happy to offer our Kids Learning Tour complete with a guide just for you! While the public tour is $39 per child and $29 per adult, private school groups/field trips can take the tour for much less (as low as $19 per child and free for teachers/chaperones, depending on the number of children and adults in the group and whether or not you need us to provide your transportation!)

As for the activities, challenges and games that kids participate in on the tour, the lessons will be similar no matter what the child's age, however, the level of difficulty will vary with age. On our public tour we provide 3 levels of activity books ranging from kids ages 6 to 11. On a private tour, however, activities can focus on the specific age group.

Another fun thing that NYC Kids Tours can provide are Kids Birthday Party Learning Tours! These private party tours can be arranged for groups of children ages 6 to 11 (or younger by request) and can be set up for groups of 4 or more WITH a parent/guardian at least 21 years of age and a tour guide. We can also offer customization for these tours if you have special destinations in mind that you'd like to visit in Manhattan, although you will still visit some destinations from the public tour in order to participate in the activities, challenges and games for the kids. The pricing for the Kids Birthday Party Learning Tours vary with number of people and level of customization.NYC Kids Tourshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16873750048700554269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2922345906363317720.post-52101579276689223582010-05-05T14:04:00.000-07:002010-07-14T10:42:45.668-07:00New York City's First Tour Company Created for Kids!NYC Kids Tours is excited to announce their Kids Learning Tour! New York is an amazing city with so many tours to choose from, but while these tours may be informative for adults, they can be extremely boring for kids (especially kids under 12 years of age.) Most tours cover history and require a great deal of walking or, with the double-decker bus, can be much too passive to hold a child's attention.

NYC Kids Tours not only provides sightseeing for the whole family, but also stops at several exciting kid-friendly locations including the Museum of Natural History and FAO Schwartz. Each child on the tour will also be given an activity book with interactive lessons that cover different subjects ranging from math and science to foreign language and art. These lessons implement state learning standards which are crucial to a child's learning, but more importantly, motivate further exploration. We will spark your child's interest on this tour and even provide take-home activities that will contribute to future learning.

This tour will charm people of all ages and provide them with a great deal of knowledge, priceless memories and the amazing world of New York City. It's the perfect way for a family, (whether locals or tourists) to spend their day.NYC Kids Tourshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16873750048700554269noreply@blogger.com0
